Natural Remedies for Heavy Metal Detox

by Cynthia Perkins, M.Ed.

One of the most important natural remedies for heavy metal detox is found in the food you eat. Heavy metals are present in a wide variety of common foods, even so-called health foods such as apple juice and whole grain bread.

Eating too much processed food can lead to common health problems such as anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s, and autism among other things, because they disrupt the neurotransmitters in your brain.

Heavy metals are frequently found in heavily processed food, but they can also appear in medications, chicken or fish that is raised by standard agricultural practices, and even drinking water. And that doesn’t begin to tackle all of the exposure brought on by cleaning supplies, beauty products, pesticides, paint, plastic and so on.

All of this exposure creates a wide variety of critical health problems over the long term. Cleansing your body of harmful heavy metals such as mercury is critical to your long-term health, but simple and affordable as well.

First and foremost, you must stop eating foods that contain traces of heavy metal, poisons and other toxins. I strongly recommend a meat and vegetable diet but it’s very important that you are selective about the types of meats and vegetables you eat.

As mentioned previously, chicken can be a common source of heavy metal poisoning because of the medications that are commonly fed to them on large industrialized chicken farms. Choose grass-fed or free-range meat sources, and fully organic vegetables that have not been sprayed with chemicals and toxins.

Soak in an Epsom salt or clay bath. Epsom salt is both affordable and readily available. Simply soak your body in an Epsom salt bath daily to help draw out heavy metal deposits that have accumulated over time. Clay baths are inexpensive and draw out heavy metals from the surface of your body as well.

Take Chlorella or Kelp supplements. Chlorella and Kelp supplements are a type of seaweed that also help draw out heavy toxins from your body. These also provide you with added nutrition that helps your body rid itself of toxins more effectively.

Many natural remedies for heavy metal detox use organic forms of sulphur. Nutritional sulphur is important and necessary for all of your basic bodily functions, particularly when it comes to removing pollutants such as heavy metals. It is a key ingredient of protein, helps your liver secrete bile, carries oxygen to your blood and attaches to pollutants so that they can be removed from your body.

Take sulphur supplements such as methionine, TMG or SAMe.

Eat foods that are natural in sulphur, such as meat, fish, eggs, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, garlic and onions. Remember to choose organic sources of these foods so that you’re not re-introducing more heavy metals or additional toxins. Fish is a healthy meat that you need to be particularly careful with because farmed fish tend to have high levels of Mercury.

Take herbal supplements that are natural sources of sulphur, use them as flavorings in your meals. Examples of useful sulphur herbs for food or supplements include Alfalfa, Parsley, Dandelion and Thyme.

Cilantro is an effective natural remedy for heavy metal detox as well, but you cannot take it too early in the detoxification processes or you risk having it drive metals such as Mercury to your brain and causing additional damage.
